Faculty of Health Sciences Inclusive Teaching Community of Practice
Do you have a teaching role within the Faculty of Health Sciences, an interest in teaching, or perhaps you were previously a teacher? In collaboration with the MacPherson Institute, a new Inclusive Teaching Community of Prractice (CoP) has been created, and we invite you to join! The goal of this CoP will be to discuss and share resources related to inclusive teaching practices in both academic and clinical settings.
What is inclusive teaching?
βInclusive teaching refers to intentional approaches to curriculum, course design, teaching practice, and assessment that create a learning environment where all students feel that their differences are valued and respected, have equitable access to learning and other educational opportunities, and are supported to learn to their full potential. Rather than being a static checklist, inclusive teaching can change depending on context. It is a lens that guides instructors to consider and address the ways historical and systemic inequities continue to shape studentsβ learning experiences.β - University of British Columbia Inclusive Teaching website
Themes for the meetings discussions will include:
- Getting to Know Your Learners
- Inclusive Approaches to Teaching Clinical Reasoning
- Inclusive Case-Based Learning
- Gender Inclusive Teaching in Health Science Teaching

In Case You Missed It...
Innovator Games: How to Teach Applied Improvisation Skills |
|
|
Originally presented as part of the 14th Annual Day in Faculty Development, on May 25th, 2021.
Sean Park, Sarrah Lal, & Hartley Jafine
There is a lot of complexity in health innovation. Many voices must be taken into consideration to develop and implement solutions to unmet needs. There are currently few opportunities to experience simulations of innovation conversations and processes. The Innovator Games is a virtual simulation-based experience to help you build health innovation competencies. This includes improvisation techniques, creative problem-solving, navigating ambiguity, building rapport over short and long story-lines, and perspective-taking.
The Innovator Games is available as a virtual and in-person four-phase toolkit (Innovation Theatre, Innovation Roulette, Innovation Simulator and Take the Stage) designed to enhance medical education through multi-disciplinary learning environments. This workshop recording gave participants a first-hand experience of using theatre to build creative confidence.

MacPFD has transformed the ways in which we support and build the skills of faculty members and senior trainees who teach and mentor our students by transitioning all development offerings to online learning opportunities. In the last year we have provided open access to more than 3,000 faculty members and guests to over 100 digital events including webinars, conferences, podcasts, articles, and video content. We have 7 teams with over 50 faculty member volunteers developing new content and online training opportunities.
Have you joined one of our events this past year? Perhaps youβve listened to our Spark podcast? Viewed one of our videos on YouTube? We need your help to keep creating this incredible content, and keeping it free to the public! Interested in helping?
When you make a gift, you will join the effort to inspire the development of teaching and learning and allow our researchers, scholars, leaders, and clinicians to achieve success as educators. Your gift will support MacPFD to continue to generate new freely available events and maintain an open access digital library.
