In Case You Missed It...
Virtual Professional Development Models
Originally presented as part of the 14th Annual Day in Faculty Development, on May 25th, 2021.

Larry Hurtubise, Denise Kay, and Elissa Hall
With the advent of COVID-19, course directors in health professions education were forced to transition to remote teaching with little training in online technologies or pedagogies. During the first three months of the pandemic numerous articles were published discussing teaching, learning, and assessment practices. Common themes of the articles were adaptation, innovation, remote delivery, flexibility in the face of a pandemic, and how to continue to educate and graduate competent health professionals.  However, while in the press of the pandemic workshops focused on leveraging virtual technologies to enable clinician educators to facilitate learning, little research is available to guide professional developers on how to effectively organize and manage ongoing virtual programs and communities.

MacPFD has transformed the ways in which we support and build the skills of faculty members and senior trainees who teach and mentor our students by transitioning all development offerings to online learning opportunities. In the last year we have provided open access to more than 3,000 faculty members and guests to over 100 digital events including webinars, conferences, podcasts, articles, and video content. We have 7 teams with over 50 faculty member volunteers developing new content and online training opportunities.

Have you joined one of our events this past year? Perhaps you’ve listened to our Spark podcast? Viewed one of our videos on YouTube? We need your help to keep creating this incredible content, and keeping it free to the public! Interested in helping?

When you make a gift, you will join the effort to inspire the development of teaching and learning and allow our researchers, scholars, leaders, and clinicians to achieve success as educators. Your gift will support MacPFD to continue to generate new freely available events and maintain an open access digital library.

Alan Neville
Alan Neville is a Professor in Medical Oncology, and the "soon-to-retire" Vice-Dean of Health Professional Education in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
This RBC Human Capital review very succinctly reviews some of the issues facing post-secondary education institutions around the world as they face COVID. There is discussion of new online modalities, use of AI, international students, financial impacts ---perhaps students as humans needing human in person interaction is missing from the article.
